Lions Loose in Murrayville, Georgia

This story comes from a blog reader by the name of Lu. I received this news article via email from Lu back in June. Sorry it has taken me so long to get to it, Lu. Apparently, there have been sightings of lions in Hall County this summer. Perhaps Georgia is a place where some pretty furocious felines are hanging out. If anyone out there lives in the area, email me.

In the story, a Hall County woman spotted an animal the size of a calf with a long tali. She said the animal was about three or four feet in length. Other sightings took place in the Hall-Lumpkin County areas right before this woman saw what she did. She was very adamant that it was not a fox or coyote. She saw the animal as it moved toward the woods close to a creek on her property. The Hall County sheriff's department was called in. They searched the area and found nothing. There is a nature preserve a few miles away, and a call was put in to the preserve about the possibility of a missing animal. However, all of their animals were accounted for. The woman said that there were cows on their property, but all were accounted for, so this beast must not have dined yet!!!

  1. Hi Prof!

    Interesting story!
It would be interesting to find out how many counties in GA have had lion sightings. I heard that Clayton County had lion sightings many years ago - but I think that was explained by lions escaping a local reserve or zoo or something. You wrote an earlier blog about lions somewhere else - TN? Maybe their offspring moved South?

  2. The thing is, if you owned the zoo and one of your lions got out, would you admit to it to the police?

nope. you wouldn't. lawsuits, jail time, who knows what.

we've been to that "zoo" and we were not impressed by the care given to the lions or the rest of the animals for that matter.
Go see for yourself. For $10 a person you can see the lions cooped up in their tiny cages with old tires to play with too.

  3. I'm startin to think we got loose lions all over the state!

In a totally unrelated story, "Yo Quiero Taco Bell?"

"Gidget the Chihuahua, largely known as the face of Taco Bell, died Tuesday from a stroke, People.com is reporting. She was 15, or 70+ in dog years.

Sue Chipperton, Gidget’s trainer, said the pooch spent much of her days sun-bathing, but could turn on the charm when it counted.

As Chipperton told People: “Gidget always knew where the camera was.”

I for one am heartbroken. Her commercials were some of my favorite ever. I'm betting her stroke may have been caused by one too many gorditas?

    RIP Gidget!

  4. I know that this is late, but several years ago I saw something like that, around 11:00 pm near a farm in Hall County. It looked like an enormous mountain lion, at least the size of a great dane. I drove past it, and it was stalking cattle by the side of the road.

    It was huge. Simply huge.
